Lake Stillhouse Hollow near Belton, Texas was the fourth stop on the Fishers of
Men Central Texas Tournament Trail. The fifth and final event is scheduled on
Lake Buchanan June 24, 2006.
Nearly 100 fisherman and their families attended the pre-tournament meeting
hosted by Price of Peace Lutheran Church in Belton, Texas. We enjoyed Rudy’s
Country Store & BBQ as they always bring some of the best “worst” BBQ in the
State.
Mark and Rebecca Maynard lifted the roof singing good ol’ gospel music, and they
are simply wonderful to listen to. I can’t wait to hear them again at Lake
Buchanan.
I was honored to introduce Jeff Fritcher founder of Legacy Outfitters to our
family of anglers and their families. Jeff’s love for the outdoors and his love
for Christ is evident when you hear him talk. The men today need to step up and
be the men we are called to be by God, in our homes and out in the world. Are
you living a legacy worth leaving?
This message was especially meaningful to me as we honored the life of Gene
Greenberg, a fellow FOM member, a brother with the Shenandoah Christian Bass
Club, and a friend. He was a decorated soldier who did two tours in Viet Nam,
where he was near fatally wounded but would return home to begin his Legacy. He
married his wife Carol, and they had two sons Trey and Brandon. Through the
pain, both mental and physical, they had a covenant and would take the steps
necessary to build their home putting Christ first.
Gene’s love of Christ was obvious by his love for his wife and children. Gene
never gave up and never complained. His life should be a testimony to each of
us. Are you living a legacy worth leaving? Gene did.
Stillhouse Marina was our host Saturday for the launch and weigh in. We launch a
field of 40 teams at 6:05 to a warm breezy summer like day.
Stillhouse Hollow is a favorite for the Central Texas fisherman as this clear
grass Corp of Engineer lake is known for its big bass lurking in the deep
hydrilla or near the hard wood spread out across the lake. Today would generate
some excitement for sure.
Repeating his win from last year Randy and wife Tammy Gass from Llano took first
place with a five fish limit at 22.61 pounds. Randy told me they fished the same
pattern as last year. The key was utilizing two drift socks over the outside
edge of grass on 25 feet throwing a Texas Rigged Zipper Worm. Being able to
control the drift into the weed line helped them stay in the bass’ strike zone
long enough to entice the strikes. “Tammy actually had 15 pounds in the boat by
7:30” said Randy, “I was more than happy to be the net man” They would stick
with this pattern and continue to cull fish throughout the day.
Taking second place was Charles Whited of San Marcos, Texas and Flint Fisher
from Elgin, Texas. They brought in 4 bass to the scales weighing 22.24 pounds,
which included a 7.32 pound kicker. They scraped out their limit pitching a 1 ¼
oz jig in to the heavy grass in about 20 foot of water.
Third place went to Lance Wenmohs of Round Mountain, Texas and Mike Clark of
Marble Falls, Texas weighing in the second big bass of the day at 7.60 with a
total weight of 18.88 pounds focusing on main lake points with grass in 10-15
feet; they were dragging a Carolina rig with creature baits, and flukes. Lance
told me the bigger fish were caught early in the morning.
The Big Bass honors got to Mike Van Brockin and Randy Grounds with a 9.90 large
mouth bass.
Finishing off the rest of the top 8 paying positions are:
4th Mike Hastings/Joey Wilson
5th Mike Van Brocklin/Randy Grounds
6th Mike Payne/Phil Warren
7th Bill Shelnutt/Dave Titus
8th Charles Gerhart/Kevin Pederzani
